What are the Sustainable Development Goals?
As described on United Nations Development Programme website ( UNDP ), the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. The 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability.
Why are the SDGs important to social enterprises?
Many social enterprises, including Project Jambo, use the SDGs to provide context and alignment to their own mission statements.
Which goal is most aligned with Project Jambo?
The SDG number 16 is PEACE, JUSTICE AND STRONG INSTITUTIONS and is the one that Project Jambo is most aligned to with respect to our vision and mission statements. It is explained by the UNDP as:
“We cannot hope for sustainable development without peace, stability, human rights and effective governance, based on the rule of law. Yet our world is increasingly divided. Some regions enjoy peace, security and prosperity, while others fall into seemingly endless cycles of conflict and violence. This is not inevitable and must be addressed. Armed violence and insecurity have a destructive impact on a country’s development, affecting economic growth, and often resulting in grievances that last for generations. Sexual violence, crime, exploitation and torture are also prevalent where there is conflict, or no rule of law, and countries must take measures to protect those who are most at risk”.
How does Project Jambo work toward this goal?
Project Jambo believes that we can no longer take social harmony for granted but instead need to take responsibility for it by having courageous conversations with those holding different views relative to our own. We provide in-person workshops with activities and games that teach the skills needed to improve relationships and promote social peace.
How does Project Jambo measure its progress toward these goals?
We seek to achieve specific outcomes which are measured via indicators that attendees provide at the conclusion of their workshop via our feedback forms.
When will the goals be accomplished?
As mentioned above, the intention is that the United Nations SDGs are achieved by the year 2030, however recent studies suggest that it is unlikely that this timeframe will be achieved.
